Selecting & Preparing the Mitti
Carefully selected baked clay is collected for its rich, earthy aroma. The clay is broken into smaller pieces and prepared for traditional distillation.
Loading the Copper Deg
The prepared mitti and water are placed inside a traditional copper Deg. The vessel is sealed and gently heated to release the clay’s aromatic vapours.
Capturing the Earthy Aroma
The fragrant vapours travel into the receiving vessel, where they condense into sandalwood oil. The oil gradually absorbs the distinctive, rain-kissed aroma of the mitti.
Maturation, Filtering & Bottling
The attar is allowed to mature, giving its earthy and woody notes time to harmonise. It is then carefully filtered and bottled to preserve its distinctive fragrance.

Its origins are deeply intertwined with Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, which is renowned for its long-standing attar-making heritage. The traditional Deg-Bhapka method used in Kannauj has remained largely unchanged for over 400 years.
The craft of attar-making has ancient origins in India, with mentions of perfume extraction found in traditional Ayurvedic texts. In Kannauj, skilled artisans devised an exceptional technique to capture the fragrance of baked earth, distilling it into sandalwood oil to produce what is now known as Mitti Attar.
During the Mughal era, the perfume culture of Kannauj flourished, and traditional hydro-distillation became a significant aspect of Indian fragrance artistry. Mitti Attar is particularly distinctive because, unlike floral attars, its primary aromatic component is the earth itself, resulting in the evocative scent that accompanies the first rain.
